A Doll's House takes place in a town in Norway based on the town Røros. Røros (also referred to as "Bergstaden") is a mining town known for copper mining. Røros is known for its church (pictured above) because it is set up in the opposite direction than almost every other church in Norway. Traditionally, churches are oriented so that the altar facing in the direction of Jerusalem. In the church in Røros, however, the altar is facing east because that is the direction where Jesus will return.

A Doll's House takes place on Christmas Eve somewhere in the 1870s. Henrik Ibsen wrote the play in the same decade that it takes place. As it takes place on Christmas Eve, there is a definite sense of religion (specifically Christianity) throughout the play. It is fitting that in the pictures of Røros, you can see the Church over the rest of the town, overseeing everything that is happening.
